Jaigarh: The Fort of Victory and World's Largest Cannon
·5 min read

The Invincible Fortress
Jaigarh Fort — "Fort of Victory" — sits on the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles), directly above Amer Fort. Built in 1726 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, it served as the military stronghold protecting Amer and the treasury of the Kachwaha dynasty.
Unlike Amer Fort, which is a palace complex, Jaigarh is a true military fort — thick walls, watchtowers, granaries, an armoury, and a sophisticated rainwater harvesting system that feeds massive underground tanks still holding water today.
Jaivana: The World's Largest Wheeled Cannon
The fort's main attraction is the Jaivana cannon — the largest wheeled cannon ever built. Cast in the fort's own foundry in 1720, it is 6.15 metres long, weighs 50 tonnes, and required four elephants to move it into position.
According to local legend, the cannon was test-fired only once. The 35 kg cannonball reportedly travelled over 35 kilometres, landing in a village that is now marked with a memorial stone. The fort's foundry, where the cannon and smaller weapons were manufactured, can still be visited.
Visiting Jaigarh Fort
Jaigarh connects to Amer Fort via a subterranean passage (currently closed to visitors) and a 2 km road along the ridge. Most visitors combine both forts in a single trip.
The Gariba Tours sightseeing bus covers Jaigarh on its comprehensive Jaipur tour routes. A composite ticket for Amer, Nahargarh, and Jaigarh forts saves money if you plan to visit all three.
Entry fee: ₹100 for Indian nationals, ₹200 for foreign tourists.
Duration: 1–2 hours is sufficient to see the cannon, museum, and watchtowers.
