A Royal Journey: Exploring Amer Fort in Jaipur
·6 min read

A Fortress in the Aravalli Hills
Amer Fort (also spelled Amber Fort) sits atop a hill overlooking Maota Lake, about 11 kilometres from Jaipur city centre. Built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I, and later expanded by Maharaja Jai Singh I, the fort is a masterwork of Rajput architecture — red sandstone and white marble blended with Hindu and Mughal design elements.
The fort served as the seat of the Kachwaha Rajput rulers for centuries before the capital moved to Jaipur in 1727. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the single most visited monument in Rajasthan, drawing over 5,000 visitors daily in peak season.
What to See Inside Amer Fort
The fort is divided into four main courtyards. The first courtyard, Jaleb Chowk, was once the parade ground. Through the Ganesh Gate — with its intricate mosaic work — you enter the private palaces.
Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors): The crown jewel. Thousands of tiny mirrors embedded in the walls and ceiling create a dazzling effect when even a single candle is lit. It was designed so the royal family could sleep under a starlit ceiling without going outdoors.
Sukh Mahal (Hall of Pleasure): An ingenious cooling system channels water through the room via carved marble channels, creating a natural air-conditioning effect centuries before electricity.
Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas: The public and private audience halls, with pillared corridors and painted ceilings that narrate hunting scenes, religious motifs, and courtly life.
